It’s Christmas season at Laramie High School, and the performing arts students are ready to show off the music they have learned this year.

The LHS band and choir groups have been steadily prepping for the Christmas season.

They practicing at every chance they get, in order to perform Christmas music for the people of Laramie, as well as for family and friends.

Senior and current member of LHS Jazz Choir Ethan Riffee, is one of the several performing arts students who has been working hard for the upcoming Christmas concert season.

“We practiced for a few months, and the closer we got to the concert the more and more we practiced. Now that it’s December we have been practicing non-stop, since we have so many concerts this month. It was a lot of work but I think it paid off, cause we sounded really good,” Riffee said.

The concert, featuring the LHS jazz band and choir groups took place in the LHS common area on Dec. 12.

Each group performed 3 to 4 arrangements of classical Christmas and jazz music for the audience.

The choir sang “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by Penatonix, “The Holiday Season” by Andy Williams, and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane.

However, they chose to use altered versions of the originals, to give the songs a jazzy feel, to match the theme of the concert.

“All of the pieces were jazzy and it was kind of cool to hear new versions of songs everybody knows by heart. But it was definitely hard to learn to not sing the versions that we already know super well,” Riffee said.

The performance took place at the beginning of the Holiday season, readying LHS for the upcoming winter break starting Dec. 18.

“It was on Thursday December 12 at 7:00. It was basically just a concert to feature the jazz choirs and bands. Band went first, then we just alternated between band and choir,” Riffee said.

Many of the students found that learning new versions of such well-known songs was enjoyable and fun, adding a nice twist to classic songs.

“It was one of my favorite concerts we’ve done. Jazz is my favorite choir that I’m in; I really like singing and listening to jazz style songs so it works out perfectly. And I love Christmas music, so it’s like the best of both worlds wrapped into one,” Riffee said.

The members of the LHS choir groups will continue working on new music for the Christmas season.

They will be performing multiple times throughout December, putting on shows for different groups of people.

All of the school choirs, which include the Women’s Choir, Men’s Choir, Plainsmen Choir, Lady Plainsmen Choir, and Jazz Choir, will also be featured in the upcoming concert December 14th.

This allows for a full showing of the LHS singers.

They will continue to work hard and spread holiday cheer this winter season.
